Vartech's multimeter range covers twelve models from a pocket-sized budget meter to a 30000-count bench-top instrument with PC interface, plus a combined multimeter-LCR meter. Rather than working through specifications in the abstract, this guide groups the range by the question that actually decides which one to buy: how it will be used, day to day.

Pocket, Handheld or Bench-Top?

The V MAS 830 LB and V 830 L+ are pocket-sized meters built for everyday continuity, voltage and basic resistance checks - the V 830 L+ adds True RMS and non-contact voltage (NCV) detection over the base model. The M 890, V 92, V 92 S, V 890 D, V 68, V 8222 H and V 8222 G are full-size handheld meters for general field and panel work, each adding capability up the range. The V 980 and V 981+ step up to premium and bench-top formats - the V 981+ is a portable bench-top meter with a dual display, PC interface and rechargeable battery, suited to a fixed test station rather than a tool pouch.

Count Resolution: What 2000 vs 6000 vs 30000 Actually Means

Count resolution determines how finely the meter can resolve a reading within each range - a higher count number shows more digits of precision before the meter needs to auto-range to the next scale. The V 92 and V 92 S are 6000-count auto-ranging meters, sufficient for the great majority of field and maintenance work. The V 68 steps up to 4000-count with a much wider frequency range (to 20 MHz) and micro-current sensitivity from 400 µA - aimed at automation, drives and control-loop diagnostic work where standard field meters run out of range. The V 980 (20000 counts) and V 981+ (30000 counts) are the highest-resolution instruments in the range, built for calibration-adjacent work and precision measurement where an ordinary field meter's resolution isn't enough.

More counts isn't always the right upgrade

If your work is panel troubleshooting, continuity checks and general field diagnostics, a 4000-6000 count auto-ranging meter (V 92, V 92 S, V 68) covers it comfortably. Reserve the 20000/30000-count instruments for work that genuinely needs that resolution - process calibration checks, precision component verification, or lab reference measurement.

CAT Rating - What You Actually Need

CAT (measurement category) rating specifies the transient overvoltage a meter is built to survive safely, based on where in an electrical installation it's used - not a general quality indicator. The V 890 D, V 68, V 8222 H and V 8222 G carry CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V ratings, meaning they're built for higher-energy environments - distribution boards, industrial supply points and outdoor service entrances. For most indoor panel and equipment-level work, a correctly CAT III-rated meter is standard practice; step up to CAT IV only when the work genuinely reaches the origin of the installation or outdoor overhead supply.

When to Step Up to the V 68 or V 981+

The V 68 is Vartech's flagship handheld - 4000-count True RMS, frequency to 20 MHz, duty cycle measurement for PWM and switching diagnostics, temperature to 1000 °C, capacitance to 100 mF, and micro-current sensitivity from 400 µA, all in one CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V rated body. It suits engineers who need one instrument that covers field work, drives diagnostics and light R&D without carrying multiple meters. The V 981+ goes further into bench territory - 30000 counts, a TFT dual display, PC interface, frequency measurement to 300 MHz and Type-C rechargeable operation, aimed at a fixed test bench rather than a tool bag.

Multimeter Plus LCR - The V 8222 H

The V 8222 H combines a full-function True RMS multimeter with a handheld LCR meter in a single CAT III 1000 V-rated instrument - inductance, capacitance, resistance, frequency and temperature alongside standard multimeter functions. For anyone who regularly needs to check a passive component's actual L/C/R value in the field rather than just continuity, this removes the need to carry a separate LCR meter.

Quick Reference by Use Case

  • Everyday pocket meter, continuity and voltage checks: V MAS 830 LB or V 830 L+.
  • General field and panel work: V 92 or V 92 S, 6000-count auto-ranging True RMS.
  • Heavy industrial use, CAT III 1000 V environments: V 890 D or V 8222 G.
  • Automation, drives, and control-loop diagnostics: V 68, with frequency to 20 MHz and micro-current sensitivity.
  • Field LCR measurement alongside standard multimeter functions: V 8222 H.
  • Fixed bench station, precision work, PC logging: V 980 or V 981+.
