What is a clamp meter used for?
A clamp meter measures AC or DC current by clamping around a conductor without breaking the circuit — essential for measuring live current in panels, motor control centres, and distribution boards. It can also measure voltage, resistance, and frequency like a standard multimeter. CIE True RMS clamp meters (DCM series) and Vartech clamp meters cover up to 1000A AC/DC.
What is the difference between a clamp meter and a multimeter?
A clamp meter measures high AC/DC current non-invasively by clamping around a conductor using the Hall effect or CT principle. A multimeter measures voltage, resistance, and small currents via test leads inserted into the circuit. Many modern clamp meters like the Vartech V 266+ and M 2101 combine both functions — current clamping plus full multimeter measurement.
Can I measure DC current with a clamp meter?
Yes, but only with a True RMS AC/DC clamp meter that uses a Hall-effect sensor, such as the Vartech M 2101 (True RMS AC/DC, 1000A). Standard clamp meters using current transformer (CT) principles measure AC current only and give zero or erratic readings on DC. Always check the meter specification for DC current capability before use.
