Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hand-driven insulation tester?
A hand-driven insulation tester (also called a megger or megohmmeter) uses a manual hand-crank generator to produce a DC test voltage — no batteries or mains supply needed. It measures insulation resistance in megaohms across cables, motors, transformers, and electrical equipment. CIE manufactures them in metal (CIE/444) and wooden body (CIE/666) variants from 100V to 10,000V.
What is the difference between CIE/444 and CIE/666 insulation testers?
The CIE/444 has an anti-magnetic aluminium die-cast body and is available up to 5000V. The CIE/666 has a seasoned teak wood body and covers higher voltage ranges up to 10,000V — wider range than the metal body model. Both use the same silent clutch-type generator mechanism and cross-coil indicator.
Are CIE insulation testers supplied with a calibration certificate?
Yes. All CIE insulation testers are calibrated against reference standards before leaving our Howrah works and are supplied with a calibration certificate. They carry a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects.
What voltage should I use to test motor insulation?
For motors up to 440V rating, use a 500V or 1000V test voltage. For motors rated 3.3kV to 11kV, use 2500V to 5000V. The CIE/444 and CIE/666 cover 100V, 500V, 1000V, 2500V and higher ranges — select the range appropriate for the equipment's rated voltage.

About Insulation Testers — Hand-Driven

CIE hand-driven insulation testers are generator-type instruments that require no batteries or mains supply — a built-in hand-cranked AC generator produces the test voltage, which is rectified to DC by silicon diodes and applied across the insulation under test. The result is read directly off a cross-coil analog indicator. This operating principle makes them inherently robust and suitable for use in remote field locations, substations, and industrial sites across India where power supply is unavailable or unreliable.

CIE manufactures hand-driven insulation testers in two body variants: the CIE/444 in an anti-magnetic aluminium die-cast body, and the CIE/666 in a teak wood body. Both are available in test voltages from 100 V to 10 kV, making them suitable for testing low-voltage domestic wiring, medium-voltage distribution cables, HV transmission equipment, and large rotating machines. All instruments conform to ISS: 2992-1987.

These instruments are widely used by power utilities, electrical contractors, substation commissioning engineers, and industrial maintenance teams across India — including in Kolkata, Howrah, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and across Eastern India. They are equally specified by engineers in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, and all major industrial centres.

Common applications include insulation resistance testing of motors, generators, transformers, HV cables, switchgear, distribution boards, and industrial wiring. CIE insulation testers are used for routine maintenance testing, pre-commissioning acceptance testing, condition monitoring, and fault location. Custom test voltages and resistance ranges can be manufactured to specification.
