IP Rating Explained: What IP65, IP66, IP67 Mean for Test Instruments

What the IP (Ingress Protection) code means, how to read the two digits, and how to match a test instrument's IP rating to your actual working environment.

Field electrical work rarely happens in a clean, dry lab. Substations, construction sites, outdoor switchyards, and rain-soaked panel rooms all expose test instruments to dust and water. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating printed on an instrument's spec sheet tells you exactly how well it's sealed against both — and choosing an instrument with an IP rating that doesn't match your working environment is a common, avoidable cause of field failures.

What the IP Code Actually Means

IP ratings are defined by IEC 60529 and written as two digits following "IP" — for example, IP65. The first digit rates protection against solid objects and dust; the second rates protection against liquid ingress. A higher digit means better protection in that category. The two digits are independent — an instrument can have strong dust protection and weak water protection, or vice versa.

An 'X' means that category wasn't tested — not that it failed

Ratings like IPX4 or IP5X use an X where a digit would go. This means the manufacturer did not test or is not claiming protection in that category — it does not necessarily mean zero protection, just that no verified claim is made. Don't assume the worst case, but don't assume any protection either — treat an X digit as unspecified.

Ratings You'll Actually See on Test Instruments

  • IP40 / IP20: Typical of bench-only instruments never intended to leave a lab or workshop — protected against tools and fingers, no meaningful water protection.
  • IP54: A common baseline for general field-use handheld instruments — dust protected, splash resistant. Fine for typical indoor industrial and covered outdoor use.
  • IP65 / IP66: Dust-tight with strong water-jet resistance — suitable for outdoor site work, substations, and washdown environments.
  • IP67: Dust-tight with temporary full immersion protection — the choice for genuinely wet field conditions: rain, standing water, accidental drops into puddles.

Matching the Rating to Your Actual Environment

There's no universal "best" IP rating — it should match where the instrument actually works. Over-specifying adds cost for protection you'll never use; under-specifying risks a field failure at the worst possible moment. A clamp meter used exclusively on a clean workshop bench doesn't need IP67. A clamp meter carried in a tool bag to outdoor substation and rooftop solar work genuinely does.
