Mobile and electronics repair is a major source of skilled jobs across Africa and the Gulf, and technical colleges and training institutes are expanding practical labs to match. Whether you are opening a repair bench or equipping a classroom, the instrument list is surprisingly consistent. This checklist covers what to buy first and what to add as the work grows.
The Core Bench: Four Instruments
Almost every repair or teaching bench starts with a digital multimeter, a variable DC power supply, a soldering station and an oscilloscope. The multimeter checks voltages, continuity and components. The bench supply powers a board safely with a current limit, so a short does not burn it. The oscilloscope shows signals that a meter cannot, such as clocks and switching waveforms.
Multimeter
Choose one with a continuity buzzer, diode test and capacitance range, and a rating suited to the mains you will meet. For students, a robust model that survives rough handling matters more than extra functions. See how to choose a Vartech multimeter and the Vartech multimeter range.
Bench Power Supply
An adjustable supply with a current limit is the most protective instrument on the bench. Single-output models suit repair work, while dual and triple-output models suit labs working on analogue and mixed circuits. Linear supplies give low noise, and switching supplies give more power in a smaller case. Read linear versus SMPS power supplies and browse Vartech DC power supplies.
Oscilloscope
Bandwidth is the first spec to match to the work. Audio and basic digital repair need modest bandwidth, while fast microcontroller and communication work needs more. Read oscilloscope bandwidth explained and how to choose an oscilloscope, then see the Vartech oscilloscopes.
Add as the Work Grows
- Function generator for injecting test signals into audio, filter and sensor circuits. See how to choose a function generator.
- LCR meter for measuring inductors, capacitors and resistors accurately. See how to choose an LCR meter.
- Desoldering tools for removing components cleanly. See the desoldering guide.
- Clamp meter for current in power circuits and chargers. See clamp meters.
Think about the whole lab, not one unit
Bench Safety
Place the lab on a properly earthed supply with RCD protection, keep a fire extinguisher suitable for electrical fires nearby, and train students on the hazards of mains and capacitor discharge. Our guide to electrical earthing explains why the bench earth matters.
CIE supplies the Vartech range as authorised distributor, along with its own instruments. Planning a lab or opening a repair shop? Send us your bench count and budget range for a suggested instrument list.
