Just for fun
CIE/444, in your browser Beta
Grab the crank and turn it. Hold the speed, watch the pointer climb and read the scale, just like a real hand-driven megger. Choose any of the 27 voltage and range versions.
Drag the crank handle round in circles (or use "Turn the crank for me"). Keys: C auto-crank on/off.
Try a scenario
One click picks the model, leads and test object. Then crank.

How the CIE/444 works
- No batteries: turning the crank drives a small generator. A centrifugal governor (clutch) holds the output voltage steady once you pass about 160 rpm, so a steady 160 rpm or more gives the rated test voltage whatever you do with the handle.
- Cross-coil pointer: there is no return spring. The pointer is driven by two coils whose current ratio depends on the insulation resistance, so it reads the resistance directly. With no cranking it simply floats.
- Crank first, then read: below the governor speed the voltage drops and the reading is not valid. Reach full speed, hold it and wait for the pointer to settle (about 3 seconds). On healthy insulation it then keeps creeping up as the absorption current fades.
- Guard terminal and infinity adjuster: versions of 1000 MΩ and above have a guard terminal and an infinity adjuster you can reach from outside. With the leads open, turn the screw until the pointer sits exactly on ∞.
- Discharge: the object stays charged after you stop. Keep the leads connected until it has discharged.
This is a training simulation. The 27 voltage and range versions come from the CIE/444 range list. The scale layout is generated automatically to show a typical arrangement; the printed scale on your instrument is the reference. Pointer movement, the governor and the test objects are idealised models. Never test live circuits.
