About This Instrument
The DET-2000 is a digital earth resistance tester measuring earth resistance and soil resistivity, with results shown on a 3½-digit LCD display. Four terminals (E1, P1, P2, E2) allow 3-terminal earth-resistance testing or 4-terminal soil-resistivity measurement. Housed in a rugged ABS body, hand-held with facility to convert to bench-top use. Rechargeable Ni-Cd cells are charged via the supplied charging cord (230 V, 50 Hz). Lo-Bat indicator on display. Accuracy: ±3% for 0–10% and 90–100% of range; ±1.5% for 10–90% of range (per IS: 9223/1979). Weight: 575 g. Dimensions: 172 × 98 × 38 mm. Note: the testing kit (spikes, wire, hammer) is an optional, separately priced accessory - it is not supplied standard.

How to Measure
The DET-2000 has four terminals marked E1, P1, P2 and E2. Press the TEST switch to take each reading and read the value directly on the LCD.

Earth resistance (3-terminal method)
Short terminals E1 and P1 and connect them to the earth connection (earth plate) under test. Connect P2 to a test spike driven 50 to 70 ft from it, and E2 to a second spike a further 50 to 70 ft along the same line. Press TEST and note the reading on the LCD.

Soil resistivity (4-terminal method)
To plan the position and depth of a proposed electrode system, bury all four spikes in one straight line with the same distance L between them (L between 50 and 70 ft), and connect them to E1, P1, P2 and E2 in order. Press TEST and read R in ohms, taking care of the range factor. Resistivity is ρ = 2πLR, in ohm-cm when L is in cm (use L in metres for ohm-m).

Resistance measurement (non-inductive, non-capacitive)
Short E1 to P1 and connect them to one end of the unknown resistance. Short P2 to E2 and connect them to the other end. Press TEST and read the value directly on the LCD.
Never connect the instrument to a live or energised circuit.
