What is inside

  • Timed readings at 15 s, 30 s, 45 s, 60 s and 10 min for up to 6 connections, with columns for Kt, IR at 40 °C, DAR and PI
  • An evaluation table that checks each connection against the minimum IR and minimum PI
  • A ready temperature factor table, Kt = 0.5^((40 - T) / 10), from 0 to 90 °C in 5 °C steps
  • Minimum IR by winding class (kV + 1, 100 or 5 MΩ), minimum PI by thermal class, and recommended test voltage by rated kV
  • DAR and PI guide bands, clearly marked as guides rather than standard limits

How it was checked

Kt values are calculated from the formula shown, and the formulas were checked against independent calculations. Limits are IEEE 43-2013 as commonly quoted, so check them against your edition.

Common questions

What is a good PI value for a motor?

IEEE 43-2013 gives a minimum polarization index of 1.5 for thermal class A and 2.0 for classes B, F and H. A PI above about 2 to 4 is generally read as good, but the form marks those bands as guides, not standard limits.

Why correct insulation resistance to 40 °C?

Insulation resistance falls as temperature rises, roughly halving every 10 °C. Correcting each reading to a common temperature lets you compare tests taken on different days. The form includes the factor table.

Using the form

  • Limits and constants come from the standards named above, as commonly quoted. Check them against the edition you work to, and use the stricter of those and your specification.
  • Where a value is a common guide rather than a limit from a standard, the form says so.
  • This is a calculation aid for qualified people. It does not replace the standard, the instrument manual or your site safety procedure.
