What is inside

  • Installation details, earthing system, test instrument and test voltage
  • A 14-circuit table with live-live, live-earth and neutral-earth readings, the minimum and pass or fail for each
  • A note on three-phase circuits and on disconnecting electronics before the test
  • Page 2: test voltage and minimum IR by circuit voltage, a five-step method, and a table of what a low reading usually means

How it was checked

The test voltages (250 V, 500 V, 1000 V) and minimum values (0.5 and 1 MΩ) are as commonly quoted from IEC 60364-6 and are shown as guides. Local wiring rules or your supply company may ask for more, so use the strictest. The form has no calculations.

Common questions

What insulation resistance is acceptable for house wiring?

A commonly quoted minimum is 1 MΩ at 500 V DC for normal 230 / 415 V circuits. A healthy installation usually reads far higher, so treat 1 MΩ as a floor and watch for readings that fall between tests.

Do I need to disconnect appliances before a megger test?

Yes. Unplug appliances, remove lamps and disconnect electronic devices, dimmers and surge protectors, because the test voltage can damage them and a connected load gives a false low reading.

Using the form

  • Limits and constants come from the standards named above, as commonly quoted. Check them against the edition you work to, and use the stricter of those and your specification.
  • Where a value is a common guide rather than a limit from a standard, the form says so.
  • This is a calculation aid for qualified people. It does not replace the standard, the instrument manual or your site safety procedure.

Need the instrument as well?

CIE supplies insulation testers, earth testers, oil BDV testers, micro-ohm meters and relay test sets, with test certificate available on request.
